Volunteering Alumni

The Volunteering Team January 2013 - March 2013

Jenna

Gina G is a ‘90s popstar best known for her smash hit single “Ooh Aaah, just a little bit”.  She can now be found volunteering in Ghana.*

In actual fact, Jenna, 24, is from Leeds and has just graduated from Huddersfield University with a degree in Fashion Media and Promotion. Jenna enjoys drinking Star, washing up and avoids cooking at all costs.  She shares her room in Ghana with Steve, Liz, and Jim McDonald, her lizard roommates.

*Jenna’s nickname originated from the inability of every Ghanaian we have met to say ‘Jenna’.

Poppy

Poppy is best known for being the brain behind the app “Shazam” (*this is not true) as she knows the lyrics and tune to every song ever written.

Poppy is 23, and lives in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire.  She recently graduated from LJMU with a degree in Media. She has ambitions to become a goat herder and has a lot of love for all the goats in Ghana.

Poppy is the Queen of Skip-Bo but is entirely incapable of shutting any doors, and has the dirtiest feet you might ever see.   Her favourite tipple is Don Simon Sangria, which often leads to the appearance of her Irish alter-ego, Siobhan.

William

William/Will/Willy/Will.I.Am/Toddler/Willy-bobs/Billy is the man of the house and is in fierce competition with Festus for the role of Team Sandema’s Alpha-male.

You can find Will in Get-Rude (the name of his house).  He is chief bug-catcher (not) and makes a mean tomato-based sauce.

Will is 19 and hails from Harrogate.  He is currently on a Gap year before heading to King’s College, London to study Human Geography.

Festus

Festus (Fes) The Rock is our national volunteer and Guide to Ghana. In his spare time, Festus enjoys modelling and the team are helping him to develop his portfolio.  He doesn’t actually enjoy this at all, but the team think we can make a fortune off his rugged good looks.

Festus is 26 and comes from Chuchuliga in the Upper East region of Ghana.  He has recently graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with a BA in Geography and Rural Development.

Tracy

Tracy/Jay-Z/Tracy Chapman. Grade 4 pianist and top butcher and chicken plucker is also fiercely competing for Alpha-male.  She has mastered one phrase in Buli (timo jaara) which means “give me extra” when making purchases at the market.  There is no need to learn anything else.

Tracy is 28 (turns 29 in April!) and comes from Manchester.  She has just finished an MA in Humanitarianism and Conflict Response at Manchester University.  As the team leader, Tracy will be in Sandema for 6 months.
